What is Students to Scholars?
Students to Scholars is a grass roots Durham, NC nonprofit that takes a novel approach to closing the “opportunity gap.” Our goal is to have more students from historically underserved communities ready for the college-preparatory path that begins in 9th grade. Students to Scholars works to identify promising elementary school students in Durham and Orange Counties. Through tutoring that begins as soon as 3rd grade, S2S identifies students who would thrive in a more challenging middle school than is available in their zip code and one with a small pupil-to-teacher ratio. We help these students apply to six local independent middle schools in either 5th or 6th grades. Once there, Students to Scholars provides cultural support to the students and families in addition to continuing our academic tutoring. We continue to support our graduates in high school with academic tutoring as needed, opportunity to participate in the Duke Pre-College program, and with other S2S programs.
